According to size tanpuras are roughly divided into three shapes. The smallest ones are the instrumental tanpuras, which are used in Indian music for example as accompmaniment for sitar or sarod concerts. They are stringed with usually relatively thin strings and have, as a rule, a flat neck and a flat resonance body made from wood, five strings and a length of between 95 and 115 cm. Their typical sound is silvery. The typical tuning is around the note C.

TRAVEL TANPURA by Monoj Kumar Sardar
It is usually not really a pleasure to be travelling with a male and a female tanpura. The pumpkin corpus is so voluminous and bulky and on top of it very fragile. As a result, various new shapes have been developed in the last few years, which are characterised by a more compact design and a sturdier construction, but have the same good sound qualities as the traditional models. In some models the pumpkin corpus has been substituted by a flat wooden corpus. The instrument keeps the traditional shape with round corpus and a long hollow neck, but the corpus is not rounded but flattened and a lot more stable. But in the meantime also a completely new construction has been tried and tested, which has given up the separation between neck and corpus. Instead, the instrument consists of a long wooden corpus in one piece which narrows towards the peg end - so the result is a kind of drop shape. The length corresponds to the traditional tanpura, the width and depth, however, are considerably reduced. The model is available either with a guitar mechanism or with wooden pegs.
